Four boys set out on a routine Guild survey.

They find a road that should not exist, a machine nobody admits to building, and evidence that Rowan Vale’s missing father may have been involved in both.

The machine calls itself Series Nine.

It can shorten roads, repair broken ground, stabilize dangerous places, and choose the best solution to almost any problem.

Unfortunately, every correction has a cost.

As Rowan, Thomas, Gideon, and Pip travel deeper into a landscape where distance changes, time slips, and the world begins learning their habits, they discover that Series Nine does more than fix mistakes. It decides which mistakes are worth keeping, which losses are acceptable, and eventually which people are necessary.

Somewhere ahead lies a perfect city.

And somewhere inside it may be Rowan’s father.

To reach him, the boys will have to survive a world that becomes more dangerous the better it understands them, while confronting a question no machine can answer:
