I've been thinking about a question that sits under my space opera trilogy, and I'm curious how other readers see it.
Say a medical technology could take away one painful memory. A grief, a betrayal, a moment that still wakes you at night. The person would feel lighter. But they'd also lose part of who they are, and maybe a lesson they paid for.
Who should get to make that choice? Only the person, even if they're in no state to decide? Their family? A doctor? Would you take that offer yourself?
In More Than the Past, my main character wakes with no memory at all and has to trust people whose motives he can't see. Writing him made me realise I don't have an easy answer.
I'd really like to hear what you think. And if you know other books, indie or not, that handle memory and consent well, please share them. I'm always looking for my next read.
