Why Buying Direct From Authors Is Worth Considering

More independent authors are selling books directly through their own websites, and there are good reasons for readers to consider it. The great thing about Spotlight on Indie is that authors can add their direct stores to the purchase options for their books, meaning it's easier than ever for readers to find them.

Amazon, Kobo and the other major retailers are convenient and important, but when you buy direct, **more of the money usually goes to the author**. That helps cover editing, covers, advertising and, ultimately, the cost of writing the next book.

Readers benefit too as authors have much more control over their own stores, which means they can offer:

* better discounts
* bundles
* subscriber offers
* referral rewards
* limited-time deals

Direct sales also give authors a little more independence from retailer algorithms. If readers buy direct or join an author's mailing list, authors can stay connected without having to rely entirely on a platform deciding whether to show you their next release.

And in many cases, buying an ebook direct is no more complicated. You still get the same kind of ebook file to read on your preferred device or app.

I'm not suggesting anyone should stop using Amazon or Kobo. Use whatever works best for you but if you're buying from an indie author you already enjoy, it can be worth checking whether they sell direct first.

You may get a better deal, while more of your money goes directly towards helping that author create their next book.
