Hyo masters wield incredible power. Some take on the speed and strength of wild animals. Others can see the fatal weakness in a foe and end a fight with a single blow. A few can even summon lightning or bend stone to their will.

Ryu has none of that.

He is only the son of a fisherman, living a quiet life at the edge of the Empire—until bandits destroy everything he knows.

Left with nothing but his own resolve, Ryu sets out for the titanic Mount Gharun, where hyo masters train their students in the ways of power. Guided by a reluctant mentor, he must cross lawless wilderness filled with criminals, deadly beasts, and angry spirits. Reaching the mountain could cost him his life. The climb to the peak is even more deadly.

And while Ryu faces his own struggles, a darker threat is rising.

An exile armed with a sword forged of living darkness is gathering followers and preparing to march on the Empire. As order begins to crumble, Ryu must decide what kind of power he seeks, and what he is willing to become to protect others.
