Interview with PR Infidel
Welcome, PR, as a Spotlight on Indie SFF author and reviewer!
PR Infidel is a GWOT veteran and issue focused author who works for the Lord first, fun second, and profits third. Tales of American Idiocy is her first for profit published work, and she has several others in production currently. For now, she continues to work and write full time and lives in the U.S. with her husband, children, and pets. She credits the Lord for her good health and ability to multitask successfully.
Q: How would you describe your storytelling?
PR: My storytelling is like George Orwell’s Animal Farm had a baby with your favorite childhood cartoon. Imagine GI Joe or Mystery Inc. playing out their insane adventures in a barnyard or lizard city while fighting a group of elitist supervillains who want to put mankind under digital lock and key. Many of my stories seem outlandish and even absurd, but scratch the surface, and you’ll find a rabbit hole Big Brother hopes you’ll never discover!
I also write ghost stories that have similar themes. Of course, these are less funny, but like the satirical ones, they too have meaning.
Because there is always a deeper point or meaning behind my tales, much of my storytelling is hard-hitting, impactful, and frankly very triggering. It’s not for everyone, but many of my readers also say that it’s unlike anything they’ve ever read!
Q: How did you get started writing?
PR: I’ve always been able to write, and for most of my life, I didn’t do much with it. That is, until COVID turned our world upside down. That dystopian nightmare woke me from my “normie” slumber; I wanted to do something, and so I turned to my old childhood hobby. I was amazed at how quickly the stories poured out of me. Even though I could always write, it was usually a very slow process. Not this time. This time, I literally couldn’t stop. Before I knew it, I had a book, Tales of American Idiocy!
Q: What kinds of characters do you like to write and/or read?
PR: I like brave, unique, and funny characters that highlight the human side of controversial issues and human struggle (even though most of my characters are animals).
I also like characters that have relatable flaws. For example, Chester has a weird, twitchy eye, a congenital flaw that made him the “least adoptable cat” at his shelter. Tre the lizard has scales that are different from all the other lizards in his farming community; because of his scales the black lizards essentially call him a “half breed” in the story Black Lizards Matter. Dwight the alligator is simple-minded but wise, much wiser than the other gators in his swamp, but it’s his humility and recognition of the Creator’s Will that makes him a hero. All these characters have to accept their flaws and dive headlong into the mission in spite of them. I think that’s beautiful and relatable because we all have to work with what we’ve got, you know?
Q: You write different lengths of stories. Do you have a preference on story length?
PR: I do like to keep the length of my short stories around 3,500 words or less, although I have written short stories as long as 5,000 words. I try to edit my work down and get things to flow as nicely as possible, but there are times where more just needs to be said.
Q: What inspired you to write Tales of American Idiocy?
PR: The idiocy around me, and more horrifically, the way the public went along with it. The fact that people could just fall in line and turn on each other was stunning, fascinating, and horrifying to me. It cemented my faith in God, because I saw first-hand what happens when people fall away from Him and put their faith in fear.
Q: How did you decide which stories to include in Tails of American Idiocy?
PR: I grouped the stories into different themes. The first is Evil Politicians and Immigration Without Representation. Two stories I had written fall into that category, a ghost story about Biden and another about ranch animals forced to welcome a group of refugee camels. The camels are an allegory for Political Islamists. The second section deals with Rioters and Rebel Rousers; in here you will find Black Lizards Matter, a satirical story about the Communist BLM movement. You’ll also find Rose City Riot, a supernatural story about Antifa in Portland Oregon. The last section deals with COVID, and I entitled this COVIDIOCY for obvious reasons. In this section you will find Chester, Dwight the alligator, and a spunky teenage deer who stands up to the animal version of Dr. Fauci.
Q: Which story in Tails of American Idiocy is your favorite and why?
PR: Conspiracy Cat because I love Chester! The idea of a cat being able to see through elitist and government overreach is hilarious and at the same time strangely believable. My readers must have agreed because he is my most popular character, so popular in fact that people were begging for more Chester. Even after releasing my second book, Conspiracy Crew: The End is Meow, I STILL get messages asking me for more Chester! (Spoiler alert, there WILL be more Chester)
Q: What else would you like visitors to know about you or your writing?
PR: Some of the things I write may seem triggering, controversial, and downright mean, but I’m not mean for the sake of being mean nor do I troll just to troll. On the contrary I’m about blowing societal narratives wide open. I’m about deconstructing lies so we can make truth great again, treat each other with decency, bring people back to God, and maybe, just maybe, we can stop buying into narratives constructed by genocidal psychopaths and their “glowing boxes” as Chester and Crew would call them. What I just described isn’t easy. It’s messy, it’s uncomfortable, and it’s not for the faint of heart. I don’t play it safe. If you like squishy romances or cozy mysteries you can forget five minutes after finishing, then look elsewhere; my books won’t be your thing. If, however, you want something bold, hard-hitting, and unapologetic, then come along, darling, because I’ve got a foil hat just your size!
Thank you, PR, for giving us meower to think about!
