Prime is a short novella, not a full-length novel, and I burned through the audio version in about two hours. A team of sci-fi special operations soldiers. Hostages held by an enemy species. A rescue that’s not what it seems. It’s a perfect set up for an action novel and it delivers in spades. I’ve read more of E.J. Fisch’s Ziva Payvan series, and this book fits right in. The universe basically exists to tell Tom Clancy or Will Jordan style stories in space, and that’s my jam. Prime is billed as a turn in the spotlight for one fan favorite character from the rest of the series. This novella starts with a little too much time being spent on the briefing and the buildup, but once the operators hit the enemy base Fisch puts it into overdrive and never lets back up. Our heroes are walking into a trap. How they get out of it and rescue the hostages is simple: courage, skill, and violence. There was never any doubt above it how this was going to go. The hero fights against tall odds, bravely risks his life and gets injured, and rescues the hostages. But not every story needs a twist ending. If you want to see heroic soldiers fighting through a bad situation to accomplish a noble goal, Prime has got what you want.
