I was fortunate to win an audio book from the author. First of all, the audio book is well produced and Sean O'Leary does a great job on narration. On to the book itself. It is so much fun! I really enjoyed it. The science fiction elements reminded me a little of Stargate (the tv series). The characters find a handheld device (called a key) that opens a portal to other realms, depending on the address you select on the device by using different symbols. When they described it, I thought "Cool! They've found a handheld dial home device!". The world they travel to wouldn't have been out of place on Stargate either. It is like Earth in many ways, with some technology less advanced and other much more advanced, and the people are held captive by an authoritarian invader. The similarities to Stargate were more that the setup up gave me the familiar vibes of a show I love. This book is very much its own thing. It is a portal science fiction/fantasy story with an alternate world, which is always such a fun story idea. I loved Ethan and his family. They were all such great characters. I appreciated his family still being involved in the story, even though they didn't go through the portal with him. Summer is also a great character. I loved how dedicated she was to finding her brother. I look forward to finding out more about her in subsequent books. Lunaria was interesting. I liked learning about its culture and people. The antagonists were suitably unpleasant. Some plot elements were a little too on the nose at times. I really enjoyed this book. It was exciting, had great characters, and a very satisfying story. I look forward to continuing the series.
